Son of Francis C. and DeLellis (Cawley) Ackerman of Altoona.

At age 35 he was a Private 1st class, having enlisted Jan. 29, 1944. He was a member of the 87th Infantry Division of Gen. Patton's 3rd Army. Walter had been overseas since September of 1944.

He was first listed as missing in action and later as died in action in Germany.
