Leslie Maurice Chaffee was my Dad. He died at the age of 65 of a massive heart attack. As he got out of his car his grandson Michael age5 came running over to him saying i love you pops. Dad replied I LOVE YOU TOO,MIKE.He fell to the ground and died. What a lovely way to die seeing his beloved grandson michael.dad went to work at the age of 6 and never had much education. at age 8 he worked at a basin farm milking cows to put food on the table for his 8 other brothers and sisters and his mother. His father left the family and dad was the breadwinner. he used to bring home milk from the farm and loved his little brother cliffie. his brother contracted scarelet fever and died.Dad always felt sad about this his whole life.He was a hardworker.Dad traveled from new england to California working along the way at basin farms. Somewhere along this journey Dad met an interesting stranger. He was dressed very well and would come out into the barn and watch the men work. He would smoke his cigar and enjoyed the sights of the working farm. My dad was fairly young at the time.A foreman tried to bully my dad,the silent well dressed stranger watching this interchange between this bully foreman and my dad. Finally the well dressed stranger pulled my dad aside and asked my Dad if he wanted him to step in and take care of this foreman.Dad told the stranger''NO THANKs I CAN FIGHT MY OWN BATTLES." DAD would also drink with this stranger and they got to know one another. This stranger turned out to be AL CAPONE. Dad spoke of AL very fondly over the years. Looking back at this encounter i am sure glad AL liked my DAD or else i wouldnt have been born and Dad was glad he didnt take AL up on his offer to take care of that foreman...Dad enjoyed planting a huge garden each year to feed his 8 children.each year he would can and put up veggies in jars so that we could eat during winter months. dad was such a hardworking man.he also had a kind heart and would bring home men from work to have a meal and share some fun. the lonely souls from work at the papermill dad worked for would be very greatful for dads kindness.DAD also had a psychic gift and used it all the time. He'd relate stories to us of talking to people who had died at the papermill he worked at.Alot of men had died there over the years so there were many spirits around. One night Dad had brought my brother John to work with him. DAD went to make his rounds leaving JOHN to sleep in a safe place. A spirit stopped DAD and warned him of JOHNS' danger.DAD ran back and found my brother sleep walking and almost ready to fall into some sharp machinery.Had Dad not been warned my brother would have been badly injured or killed. On DADs' family tree is SARAH GOOD/HUNG AS A WITCH Salem witchtrials/also HERBERT FULLER CHAFFEE/1st class passenger who died on the TITANIC.His wife and baby son survived. Dad favorite place was California and he shared many stories of his adventures in the golden state. As a child it was my parents stories of their adventures before children that transported me away in my imagination.MOM'S of CHICAGO, DAD'S of CALIFORNIA.Dad would wave to everyone on the road when he was driving. i once asked him why he did this and his reply to me was that its his way to make the world a friendlier place and do his part to bring world peace.I see his spirit sitting under the ole pine tree in langdon new hampshire enjoying the sounds of the birds and quiet after a hard days work in the garden. DAD had eight children so a quiet moment must have been hard to come by.dad also was a very talented dowser. this is spiritual gift. when he would find water to cut birch twig in his hand would draw him strongly toward the mark. sometime this force would push him down to his knee's.
