Actor. Born Werner Johannes Krauß, he was considered one of the leading actors of German films and stage. Best known for his lead role in "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" (1919), widely regarded as the pinnacle of German Expressionist filmmaking, his other film credits include "The Pagoda" (1914), "Revenge of the Dead" (1916), "The Beautiful Princess of China" (1917), "The Burning Earth" (1922), "The Treasure" (1923), ""Waxworks" (1924), "Tartuffe" (1925), "The Joyless Street" (1925), "The Student of Prague" (1926), "Secrets of a Soul" (1926), "Nana" (1926), and "Royal Scandal" (1927). He appeared in over one hundred and thirty films. Unlike many of the major talents of his time, Krauss did not flee Germany with the rise of Nazism. He starred in many of their cinematic vehicles. Considered most notorious was "Jud Süss" (1940), a film ordered by the Nazi Minister of Propaganda, Joseph Goebbels. After World War II, all associated with this film were plagued with recriminations for their participation, which drove Krauss out of the country for more than three years. Leading German democrats registered emphatic opposition to public appearances by him. In June 1954, one of West Germany's highest decorations was ceremoniously conferred on him by West Berlin's cultural and education chief. The actor appeared in only three more films before his death.
