Emma Idella Oesch Alvis, 90, a homemaker, died Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003. A service is being planned. Memorial contributions may be made to Big Bend Hospice, 1723 Mahan Center Blvd., Tallahassee, FL 32308. Culley's MeadowWood Funeral Home, Riggins Road Chapel (877-8191) is handling arrangements.

She was born in Danvers, Ill., to Christian C. Oesch and Wilmena Kath Oesch. She met and married Clifford Vern Alvis of Downs, Ill. They were married for more than 40 years. During their marriage, she lived abroad with him while he worked with the Marshal Plan and Aid to International Development in the following countries; Turkey, Egypt, Libya, Madagascar, Nigeria, Haiti, Thailand and Vietnam.

She was a longtime resident of Germanton, N.C., where she was a member of Oak Summit Methodist Church. She was past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, Creve Coeur Chapter in Peoria, Ill., and honorary member of Helen Marie Smith Chapter in Winston-Salem, N.C. She made Tallahassee her home for the past four years, living at Heritage Oaks Senior Housing and then Alterra Sterling House.

She was an avid bridge player. She loved flowers, birds, dogs, puzzles, autobiographies and kept up with state and world affairs. Her heart remains on her "hill" at her previous country home in Germanton. Survivors include her daughter, Verona Sue "Ronnie" Alvis Swaim; three grandchildren, Cheryl Lynn Swaim Brenneman of Winston-Salem, (and husband Richard), William Gregory Swaim of Gastonia, N.C., (and wife Julie) and Timothy Clay Swaim of Richmond, Va. (and wife Lynn); seven great-grandchildren, Richard Blake Brenneman, Clayton Bryce Brenneman, Julia Mae Brenneman, her namesake, Emma Catherine Caroline Swaim, Spencer Olin Swaim, Tyler Clay Swaim and Caleb Michael Clay Swaim; her sister, Leona Oesch Szabados of Peoria; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews in Illinois, Idaho, Washington state, Florida and California.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford Verne Alvis, and six sisters and brothers, Christian Oesch, William Oesch, Homer Oesch, Byron Oesch, Amelia Oesch Fitchhorn and Mae Oesch Marrow.
