By 1861 Herman was living with his mother, his siblings and his wife in the Ahrens farmhouse in what was then Berlin, Ontario.
Herman's father, Karl Henrich von Ahrens, dropped the 'von' when he came to Canada, having no use for a title in his new country. Apparently, Herman kept the 'von' in his name, which may be why his son, Carl Henry Ahrens, a prominent landscape painter, sometimes used it in his name.
Like many members of his immediate family, Herman died of consumption. Herman shares a marker with his brother, John, who died of the same disease.
