Uncle Roosevelt was born to John Thomas Cantrell and Margrett Melvina Ford in Indian Territory. He grew up in Haskell County as the family farmed in and around the communities of Keota, Star, and Blaine Bottoms. In 1931 he married Ollie Davis. He was a machinist in Tulsa and later in Pampa, Texas. He was one of seven sons of John T. Cantrell, but the only one to live beyond his teens.
