A jeweler and optician by trade he began his career in Delano and Little Falls, Minnesota where he also served as Mayor in the 1890s. Moving to Oregon in 1900 he continued in those businesses and expanded into banking, farming and raising pure-bred cattle and sheep. He served for many years as State Senator from Multnomah and later Tillamook County in the Oregon State Legislature.
