Roman Catholic Pope. Born Francesco Todeschini Piccolomini, he was the nephew of the future Pope Pius II. Appointed by his uncle to the See of Siena in 1460, in March of that year Pius II made him a Cardinal. Shortly thereafter was sent as a legate to the March of Ancona. He participated in the conclaves that selected Popes Paul II in 1464, Innocent VIII in 1484, and Alexander VI in 1492. Upon Alexander VI's death in 1503, Cardinal Piccolomini was elected Pope Pius III on September 22. He took his name to honor his uncle. He was already frail at the time of his election and died only 26 days later from a leg ulcer.
