Eligah Lawrence Anderson was born Decemer 9, 1903, in Whitley County, Kentucky, son of Andrew Jackson Anderson (1872-1944) and Sarah Baker Anderson (1876-1955), In 1900, Jack, age 28, a farmer, born April 1872 in Kentucky; and Sarah, age 24, born March 1876 in Kentucky; and their 2-year old daughter Melda, born April 1898 in Kentucky; were living in East Pine Knot, Kentucky (Whitley County) with Jack's parents: William, age 65, a farmer, born May 1835 in Kentucky; and Elizabeth, age 64, born November 1836 in Tennessee. Also living in the household was Jack's sister, Nancy, age 16, born April 1884 in Kentucky. At least three other Anderson households were living in the same block as this family, undoubtedly related. Jack's son Milford was living on a farm in Jellico Creek, Kentucky (Whitley County) with his grandparents, Daniel and Sarah Taylor, and two of their younger children, Virginia and James D. Taylor.

In 1910, he was living with his parents and siblings in Jellico, Kentucky (Whitley County). His father and his father's son by a previous marriage, Milford, were working in the coal mines. The household, all born in Kentucky, included: Andrew, age 33, married twice, married 13 years; Sarah, age 32, married twice, married 13 years, Milford L, age 16; Melda, age 12; Stella, age 9; Elijah, age 7; Flora, age 5; Maggie, age 3; and Dessie, age 0.

By 1920, his family had bought a farm in Walnut Grove, Kentucky (Rockcastle County). The household included: A. J., age 52; Sarah, age 43; Elijah, age 14; Thora, age 13; Maggie, age 11; Dessie, age 10; and Ella, age 9, born in Kentucky.

By 1930, his parents had moved to Oklahoma and were living on a farm they owned in Lexington (Cleveland County) but Eligah had left home. He had married Effie Walden in 1923 and had started his family. In 1930, they were renting a farm in Lexington, Oklahoma. Their household included: Eligah, age 26, married at age 19; Effie, age 25 born in Oklahoma, married at age 18; Evelyn, age 6, born in Oklahoma; Harold, age 4, born in Oklahoma; and Charles, age 2, born in Oklahoma.
