Bertha was raised, mostly, by her grandmother, Electa Elizabeth Porter in Porterville, UT.
Later, in Burley, ID, her mother married Thomas Perez Salinas. She considered her stepfather her "daddy" and used his last name (Salinas) in both LDS & civil records, until 26 Jun 1944. At that time, she discovered she wasn't legally adopted and started to use the last name South as her Maiden name. About 1955 her bishop told her to use Porter as her maiden name because of no legal adoptions.
