Son of Robert Coffee Barling and Matilda Elizabeth Hill of Sebastian County, Arkansas. Grandson of Rebecca Tucker, of Maryland, and Aaron Barling, an Englishman and soldier from Maryland who originally posted to Fort Gibson in Indian Territory, and subsequently farmed in an area of Arkansas which became established as the community of Barling.

Aaron Albert Barling was born in 1857, four years before the Civil War. When war broke, his father enlisted in 1862 with the Confederacy where he served as a private in Company B of the Arkansas 35th Infantry Regiment. The war ended in 1865. Aaron's father returned home where he farmed.

Margaret passed shortly after the 1880 census. The exact date is unknown, but most likely 1881, and possibly from child birth. She is presumed to be buried in one of the unmarked graves at Steep Hill Cemetery where her husband, child, and parents rest.

October 10, 1882, marriage records indicate Aaron Barling next married Mattie E. Madden in the same county. They had at least three children: Robert A., Blanch B. and James M. Barling. His mother died ten years later in 1892. His second wife, Mattie, died in 1898 at the age of 40. Funeral records indicate she was laid to rest at Steep Hill Cemetery. Her grave is unmarked.

After Mattie's death, Aaron again married and became the husband of Etta Ethridge Barling. They married in Sebastian County, Arkansas, August 6, 1899, and made their home for a period of time in Indian Territory, near the Arkansas River (Oklahoma). During this time, excitement over the development of Indian Territory ran high. The Oklahoma land rush where pioneers flocked for ownership of unassigned land took place in April of 1899.

Aaron and Etta had at least one child, Albert "Al" Barling, born in 1902. He was the father of at least six children: Jefferson D., Robert A., Blanch B., James M., Mary M., and Albert Barling.

Aaron's father died in 1904. Aaron died in 1905, leaving Etta widowed. His youngest daughter Mary, who was Etta's step-daughter, joined the home of her uncle, William H. Barling, Aaron's brother (1910 census).
