John was born in Ohio. He was among the first 75,000 men to enlist in the Union Army when the Civil War started. He served until 29 Nov 1864 when he was discharged from the Army and returned home to Ohio and went to work in Ironton. While there he met the married Catherine Miller Heiman with whom he became romantically involved. In 1866 Catherine gave birth to their daughter Elizabeth (Lizzie). John sued for, and received, custody of Elizabeth. In 1871 he married his wife Amelia in Clarksville, Tennessee. Her maiden name was Eschmann and she had been married previously to Valentine Pfening. The couple never had any children of their own. In 1885 they moved to Metropolis, Illinois, where they remained for the rest of their lives. John died of malarial fever at the age of 66.
