Joseph was the son of George Ambach and Rosa Bauer. About 1905 he married Rosa Bauer and they had four children: Violet, Joseph, Raymond and Thelma. As a teenager he worked as a laborer in a tannery. The 1920 Census enumerated his occupation as being a brewery worker. At the time of his death he was a millwright. Joseph committed suicide as a result of ingesting carbolic acid. He was 32 years old.
