Born and raised in Herington, Kansas to Rose (Dolan) and Art Farrell. She was the third daughter born to the Farrells.

Monica was educated at Ursuline School in Paola, Kansas where her Aunt Eulalia Dolan taught. Upon graduation Monica attended Mount Saint Scholastica in Atchison, Kansas.

While working in Peoria, Illinois, World War II broke out. Monica wanted to represent the Farrell family during this conflict and she enlisted at the rank of 1st Lueit. as a US Army Reserves Dietitian. She was stationed on Saipan Island in the south Pacific and saw the Enola Gay take off to bomb the Japanese homeland.

After the War ended, Monica returned to school at St Louis University to earn a Masters in Dietetics. Monica moved to Kansas City and was elected President of the KC Chapter of the American Dietetics Association.

She retired from the US Army Reserves as a Lietenant in 1951.
