"Dick" Manning passed away Tuesday at the Soldiers' Home in Holyoke in the presence of his loving family. He was born in Springfield to the late Gladys (Johnson) and Daniel Manning, II. He was a graduate of Technical High School in Springfield. Dick served in the US Marine Corps during WWII attaining the rank of Sergeant. He was a proud second generation firefighter for the City of Springfield retiring as an acting Lieutenant. He served for 34 years and received the departments Distinguished Service Award in 1981. He also enjoyed a second career at STCC for 17 years. Dick had a great love of the outdoors, participated in hunting, fishing and downhill skiing into his mid-eighties. He was a communicant of St. Michael's Cathedral in Springfield. Richard was predeceased by his beloved wife, Shirley (Osborne) Manning in 2005. He was the loving father to, Teresa Dowd and her husband Jack of West Springfield, Julie Manning of Wayland and Richard Manning of Springfield, proud grandfather of John Dowd and his wife Lisa, Sarah Long and her husband Christopher, Meghan Dowd Murray and her husband Brian, Erin Dowd and husband Noam Reuveni and Caitlin Manning, adored great-grandfather of Moira, Colin, Bridget, Jack and Daniel and caring brother of Daniel Manning, III and his wife Eleanor of Westfield. His funeral Mass will be Wednesday, June 14th at 10:30AM in St. Michael's Cathedral, 260 State Street, Spfld., followed by entombment at St. Michael the Archangel Mausoleum.

Dick's brother, Daniel Manning, is buried in the Agawam Veterans Cemetery.
