Samuel was the youngest of four children born to Joseph Butler and Hulda Jones.

He married Ibbie Sabrina Johnson on September 11, 1911 in Clay County, Indiana. They had one son, Harry E. Butler born May 6, 1913 in Brazil, Indiana. Harry died during World War I and is interred in the Brittany American Cemetery and Memorial in France.

Harry and Ibbie were divorced on September 9, 1917. Their divorce date is mentioned in Ibbie’s marriage application to Charles Fowler. Samuel died about 15 months later at the age of 30 from brain cancer.
