Maria was born in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains to Nicolas Montoya and Bernarda Fresquez. After graduating from Brighton High School in 1966, Maria continued her education at University of Northern Colorado in Greeley. She and Ernesto were married on September 6, 1969 at Saint Augustine Church in Brighton. She was an asset to the Brighton area, where she lived most of her life. She dedicated her services and skills as director of Brighton Housing authority for over 20 years, helping build the housing authority into a cornerstone of the community while providing genuine and heart felt service. Prior to that, she worked as a tutor in the Fort Lupton and Fort Collins school districts. She enjoyed being outdoors in the mountains, hiking, fishing and camping. She loved traveling across the world with Ernesto and sharing her traditional New Mexico cooking with all loved ones. Providing a “home” for her loved ones was of great importance to her. Survivors beside Ernesto included: children Ignacio Pascual Alvarado (Beatris) of Thornton, Alma Maria Ross (Nathan) of Dolores, CO and Arturo Thomas Alvarado (Jamie) of Thornton; brothers Joe Montoya, Alex Montoya, Lawrence Montoya, Leonard Montoya and Robert Montoya of Brighton; sisters Alice Welch of Brighton, Marie Martinez of Thornton, Irene Flores of Brighton, and Dorothy Montoya of Brighton; and grandchildren Maya, Isabella, Alessandra, and Tomas. Preceding were sisters Marilyn Nedved (Montoya) and Charlene Montoya, nephew Gary Welch and niece Angelina Montoya. Celebration of life held February 7th at Knights of Columbus in Brighton.
