Bassel was the son of Syrian President Hafez al-Assad and his wife, Aniseh Makhluf. From a young age, Basil was groomed to succeed his father. He was chief of presidential security, ran a highly publicized anti-corruption campaign, and frequently appeared in full military uniform at official receptions, signaling a family commitment to the armed forces.
