Obituary, October 15, 1959:

Charles H. Adams, 77, Grinnell, died early Tuesday evening at a local hospital, where he had been a patient the last 3 1/2 weeks.

Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Kenneth L. Pohlenz of the First Friends church officiating, assisted by Dr. Charles O. Whitely of Greenville. Mrs. Don Renaud will provide organ music and vocalists will be Mrs. Harvey Mikel Jr. and Mrs. Charles O. Whitely.

Pallbearers will be George German, Ed Green, Bill Oliver, Denvil Oliver Sr., Merton Johnson and Clair Strand. Flower bearers will be Mrs. Ed Green and Mrs. Everett Sanger. Burial will be in Hazelwood cemetery.

The son of Melvin Charles and Elizabeth Adams, he was born Sep. 2, 1882, on a farm south of Grinnell and attended rural school near his home.

On Nov. 9, 1909, he was united in marriage with Lela Utley at Albia. They would have celebrated their 50 wedding anniversary next month.

Mr. Adams worked for the Rock Island railroad for 38 years. He had lived his entire life in the Grinnell community, and attended the First Friends church.

He is survived by his wife and nine children: Mrs. Otto (Beulah) Corrick of Keswick; Leonard Adams of Richmond, Calif.; Melvin Adams of Grinnell; Raymond Adams of Compton, Calif.; Mrs. Don (Lucille) Ackerman of Council Bluffs; Mrs. Cloyd (Maxine Thompson) of Grinnell; Virgin Adams of Kansas City, Mo.; Kenneth Adams of Newburg, and Clayton Adams of Cedar Falls.

Also surviving are 24 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren, besides two brothers and three sisters: Mrs. Deliah Brown and Miss Alma Adams, both of Yucaipa, Calif.; David and Orin Adams, both of Visalia, Calif.; and Mrs. William (Mercy) Watson of Estherville.

Mr. Adams was preceded in death by his parents and two children, Dorothy Louise when she was 8 1/2 years old and Wanda Arlene at 20 months, and three brothers and two sisters.
