Joseph Wilson Callaway Jan. 21, 1920 - Feb. 3, 2008

Resident of Danville

Joe was born in Akron, Ohio, grew up in Evanston, Illinois but summered on Cape Cod. During his childhood summers on Cape Cod his beloved brothers taught him sailing which became a great passion. He once sailed from New York to Cape Cod.

In WWII he was an Army Captain and artillery battery commander and served overseas in Anguar, Pelilue, the Philipines, and the initial landings on Honshu, Amori, Japan. He was recalled into the Army for the Korean War and served as a senior military advisor KMAG (Korean Military Advisory Group) officer to a Republic of Korean Army (ROKA) medium artillery battalion. Joe was proud of his service to our nation. He was a good soldier.

He raised his family in Enterprise, Alabama and later in beautiful New Canaan, Connecticut, had a successful career in advertising and executive management recruiting in New York City but never forgot his wonderful southern small town experience.

For 20 joyful years he was retired and living in Danville and the last few years he has been under the attentive care of Diablo Lodge. Joe had an extraordinary positive outlook on life that was never more evident than in the last eight years of his life when he endured four major surgeries but never once complained. He was a gregarious guy who enjoyed a good laugh. His witty sometimes-corny jokes brought a smile to all those lives he touched.

He enjoyed every moment of every day and loved dearly Elizabeth, his wife of 65 years, and family. He is survived by Elizabeth, his sister Jan Kyne and his son Joe Jr. and daughter Joy Larcom. His grandchildren are Tucker, Casan and Quinn Callaway and Jessica and Clifford Larcom and his great grandson is Wilson Callaway. He had a very positive impact on the lives of his five grandchildren.

Friends and family are invited to a memorial service on Thursday, February 14 at 11:00 at the Wilson & Kratzer, Chapel of San Ramon Valley, 825 Hartz Way, Danville.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the Blue Star Moms, PO Box 2537, San Ramon, CA 94583 in memory of Joe Callaway. Wilson & Kratzer, Danville 925-820-2999
