Personal History
Grace Vandel was born in Lineville, Iowa on March 15, 1915 to James Anderson and Mary Ellen Vandel. She had two sisters, Alta and Crete; and five brothers: Julius, Ben, Paul, Roy and Kenneth. Her father worked for the railroad. The family moved several times. First they went to Vaughn, Wyoming; then to Mitchell, Nebraska and finally to Alliance, Nebraska.
Grace was athletic and was on the all-star basketball team. She graduated from Alliance High School in 1933. She joined her sister, Crete, in Houston, Texas after the birth of Crete's first child, Shirley, so she could help take care of her. From that experience, she decided to go to nurse's training, which she did for the next two years.
During her time in Houston she met Beuron Boyd, who became her husband. They were married October 6, 1938. They had two sons, Robert Bruce and Byron Lee Boyd.
Grace passed away at the age of 93 on May 2, 2008 in Houston, Texas.
