UPDATE JULY 2021:

I have been informed of a second marriage for Edward following the death of his wife Alice; it is brief and incomplete data but I am presently researching this matter and will update Edward's page as I verify things. I do feel that I can state with certainty that Edward's second wife was named Florence Jane Tanner, and she would outlive Edward to marry again, in very late life, to a Thomas Belsey. Any thoughts or further details would be greatly appreciated!

Sergeant Edward John Banks was the father of Edward William Banks, KIA in 1943; I have only recently found Edward Sr.'s partial records from the Royal Marines Light Infantry, and am trying to add to his other information. I do know for fact that he was born on 18, April 1880; he married Alice Frances in 1907 and their son Edward William was born in 1909. There seems to be verification of thoughts that Alice died young and that Mr. Banks remarried (see information below), but again, I am still putting everything together.

While it is an accepted fact that Edward Sr. died in England, I have not verified place or date as of yet - I will update this page as soon as possible.

From the National Archives, Public Records regarding Eddie's father's military history:

Reference:
ADM 159/18/10598

Description:

Name Banks, Edward John
Register Number: 10598
Division: Royal Marine Light Infantry: Portsmouth Division
When Enlisted/Date of Enlistment: 03 November 1899
Date of Birth: 18 April 1880

There is personal comment to me via genealogical research - that I am trying to verify at this time - that Edward was centered in China during the violent 1900 Boxer Rebellion, in which the RMLI played a prominent part, with one Marine being awarded the Victoria Cross. NOTE: Recent documents discovered (see images) seem to verify that Edward was in Hong Kong during the time period of his request for membership as a Freemason.
