Born in Iowa, John came west at the age of 18. He was living in Colorado in 1876, then moved on to Prescott, AZ where he met and married May Thorne in 1883. While living in Prescott, he owned a hotel and was Mayor of that city for two terms. He was also heavily involved in gold mining. In 1900 he relocated to El Cajon in San Diego County where he had previously purchased a 85 acre ranch. Ten acres were already planted in lemon trees to which he added another 40 acres of them. In 1912 he shipped out seven thousand boxes of lemons grown on his ranch and became one of the most successful men in his community. He and May had two children, John Frank Daugherty and Imogine "Jean" Daugherty.
