Born to Beatrice and Gilbert Bates, one of the "Grand Old Men" of Valley Center and co-owner of the iconic Bates Nut Farm. Passed away at the family home on Woods Valley RD and said he would only leave there "Feet First" says his daughter Kathy Bates-Lande. Moved to Valley Ctr where his father purchased the land that would eventually become Bates Nut Farm and graduated from the old Escondido High in 1939. Served in the US Army during WWII and was discharged in 1943. Married Margaret, in 1942 in Yuma, AZ.
