Annie Lida Rogers was the fourth of seven children born to Michael William and Annie Lida Rogers. Apparently, she wished to attend a friend's birthday party, but her mother told her that she could not go because the friend was still recovering from a bout with diphtheria, a highly contagious and potentially deadly disease. Annie begged her mother until she finally relented. According to her obituary, "She was siezed Saturday night [5 January 1907] with a violent attack of diphtheria--Drs. White and Wooten say the most severe they ever saw, and in less than 24 hours she died." She was ten years old. At the time of her death, diphtheria was a much feared children's disease. The bacillus forms a pseudomembrane in the victim's throat that can lead to suffocation; exotoxins, secreted by the bacillus, can produce other symptoms such as heart inflammation.
