Sonora resident Sue Elizabeth "Betty" Arena died Saturday at Avalon Care Center in Sonora. She was 85.

Born in Brevard, N.C., she moved to Sonora with her family in the 1930s.

She worked as a nurse in Sonora, Stockton and San Francisco. She also cut Christmas trees, harvested pine cones and worked as a bartender.

She enjoyed gardening, crocheting, doing puzzles, cooking, walking, collecting rocks, spending time with her family and bowling. She also entered floral arrangements in the county fair, where she won many awards, and was handy with a skill saw, her family said.

She was survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, one daughter and son-in-law, a sister, nine grandchildren and their spouses, and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Owen Orr and Effie Galloway-Orr; brothers, Kenneth, Lyndon and James Orr; and sister Lois Orr-Hernandes.
