Alberts, an officer with the Los Angeles Police Department, was killed in the line of duty when he was involved in an on-duty auto accident at the corner of Laurel Canyon and Magnolia in the community of Valley Village. At the time of his death he lived at 13535 Valerio St, Van Nuys.Los Angeles Police Officer II Steve Alberts was assigned to uniform patrol, North Hollywood Division. He was a dedicated and professional police officer, who was well liked by those who worked with him and the community he served.

On the evening of May 31, 1981, Officer Alberts (driver) and his partner, working in a black and white police vehicle, responded Code 3 (red lights and siren) to an Officer Needs Help radio call.

While traveling southbound Laurel Canyon Boulevard at Magnolia Boulevard a pickup truck, pulling a trailer, made a left turn onto Magnolia Boulevard directly into the path of the police vehicle. Officer Alberts' vehicle collided with the truck and was killed instantly. His partner survived with minor injuries.

The driver of the truck was discovered to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage.

Officer Alberts was survived by his wife and a young daughter.
