The Shot at Dawn Memorial Garden at the National Millennium Arboretum features a Shot at Dawn memorial sculpture as its centrepiece. The sculpture is based on the likeness of British Private Herbert Burden, who was executed by firing squad on July 21, 1915 at the age of seventeen for the crime of desertion, and is intended to honour the 306 Commonwealth soldiers who were executed during World War One for (what were considered at the time) crimes of desertion or cowardice. On Aug. 16, 2006, British Defence Secretary Des Browne announced that the government would issue full pardons for all 306 Commonwealth soldiers who were executed under these circumstances during World War One. Designed by Andrew DeComyn, the memorial is positioned at the eastern end of the Arboretum, close to the River Tame, where dawn first breaks on the site.
