Lora Lee Hager Fillinger was the daughter of Frederic H. Hager (b 1872, d 1910) and Virginia ("Jennie") M. Plumley Hager (b 7-1875, d 7-1-1974). Her siblings included William M. "Coonie" Hager (a World War I Veteran, b 5-9-1899, d 9-1980), Everett I. Hager (b 9-4-1897, d 12-1976), Walter "Dub" Hager (a US Army World War II Veteran), Eliza D. Hager (b 3-4-1912, d 12-23-1994) and Montgomery Hager (a US Army Combat Engineer and World War II Veteran, b 6-7-1910, d 5-22-1950). After her father passed away, her mother remarried to Edward Cooper (1871 - 1956), and her half siblings included Donald J. Cooper (b 8-19-1918 - d 4-9-2005), Ocel Cooper (1915 - 1915), and Opal Cooper (1915 - 11-17-08). She was a native of Crawley Creek, West Virginia, and the wife of Enoch Rice Fillinger (b 6-1-1900, d 4-11-1978). She was an extremely hard working woman whose husband owned Becky's drive-in in Chapmanville, West Virginia, coal mined, grew crops, raised a family through the Great Depression and World War II, and also served as the local undertaker and funeral director. Upon developing black lung, he retired, bought the Ponderosa Trailer Park in the 1950's and moved his Family to Korona, Florida. After developing the Ponderosa, he obtained a liquor license, opened a bar on US 1 South, and grew a small citrus orchard on the trailer park property. His business interests and accomplishments, vast and diverse in nature, would not have been possible without the stalwart, continuous backing of his lifelong wife, Lora, and her entire Family knew that she was the stability and silent strength that bonded an incredible Family. While living in Crawley Creek, she rasied crops, maintained the household, worked a vein of coal in the side of the mountain near her homestead, tended livestock, made clothes for her children, kept her Family fed, and did the millions of things daily to keep the household running while her husband worked coal mining and his other multiple jobs. She was a pillar of the local Pentecostal Holiness Church, and I have difficulty remembering anyone who loved God more or maintained a religious strength that could match hers. The first time that my son, Caleb, saw her headstone, he looked up at me questioningly, and as I told him a few thoughts and impressions that I had of Lora Fillinger, I recall that she was the only person that I ever knew that I described as "saintly." Her Family and her faith were her life. The Holiday Season, beginning with Labor Day and culminating in Christmas Day, was magical in her home, and she left no doubt in anyone's mind that her home was her home. All were welcome, but all who entered her home complied with her rules without exception. She worked wonders in a kitchen, and her daughters, and many of her granddaughters, inherited her skill. Her children included Nancy Fillinger Thomas (b 5-5-1921, d 12-2-1994), Ruby S. Fillinger Webb (b 12-24-1923, d 9-4-1997), Ethel Fillinger Durrance (School Nurse, Flagler-Palm Coast HS, b 1-27-1928, d 1-18-1983), Homer Fillinger (b 1-11-1930, a US Army paratrooper and Korean War Veteran, d 2-5-2008), Nadine Fillinger Nipper (b 5-27-1933, d 4-27-2006), Cora Fillinger Adams (b 9-22-1936), Bessie Fillinger Thompson (b 12-11-1939), Betsy Fillinger Spivey (b 12-11-1939), and Rebecca Fillinger Moody (Deputy Sheriff/ Dispatcher, Flagler County Sheriff's Office, b 10-25-1946, d 7-12-1994). MawMaw turned a golden hue during late fall, 1994, and was diagnosed with cancer after consultation with her doctor in Daytona. She passed away in her home among her Family, as she would have wanted.
