Walter George Ellerton, husband of Annette Lawrence Ellerton and father of Walter Shawn Ellerton, was a pillar of the St Augustine, Florida community. He was a veteran having served his country as a sailor in the United States Navy during the 1950's. His father had served as a sailor with the British Royal Navy, and as a result, Walt had a fascination with, and became an acknowledged expert of, drednaught battleships. His distinguished career with the Florida Department of Corrections spanned 1965 through 2000 and ended with his retirement as Correctional Probation Senior Supervisor of the St Augustine Probation & Parole office. He proved, on several occasions, to be one of "the few, the precious few" who made an extremely difficult and thankless job worth doing well. He had an incredible talent for bucking up any number of discouraged officers who were ready to throw up their hands and quit. Walt returned to his community by teaching with the St Augustine Vocational-Technical Center, the Florida Department of Corrections and the Trinity Episcopal Parish of St Augustine. There are not enough laudatory words and phrases within the English language that I could use to accurately describe this consumate professional, husband, father, educator and friend. He was cremated and laid to rest in Murphy, North Carolina. Rest in Peace, Walt. You were one of "the few, the precious few."
