Ismael B. "El Maestro" Aguilar was born on July 25, 1923 in Shafter, Texas to Josefa (Barragan) Aguilar and Pedro Aguilar. He served in World War II with the U.S. Army. He was honored on Memorial Day 2004 in Washington D.C. For his service to the United States, he received numerous medals including a Bronze Star with an emblem of valor; two Purple Hearts; European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign medal with three Bronze Stars; Good Conduct medal; Meritorious Unit commendation; Asiatic-Pacific Campaign medal; Philippine Liberation medal and ribbon; Army service ribbon and Army overseas ribbon; Army Occupation-Far East medal; American Campaign medal; and National Defense medal. He moved to Uvalde in 1952 and spent more than 50 years as a barber. He is survived by five daughters, Elva Garza, Lucy A. Fernandez and husband, Ernest, Elsa Fosbenner and husband, William, Emma “Sukie” Aguilar and Belinda Aguilar and husband, Armando Lopez, all of San Antonio; five sons, Ismael B. Aguilar, Jr. and wife, Martha, of San Jacinto, California, Jose Luis Aguilar and companion, Lisa Fausto, Daniel Aguilar, all of Uvalde, Joel Aguilar and Michael Aguilar and wife, Angelina, all of San Antonio; three sisters, Ernestina Flores of San Antonio, Rosa Garcia of Uvalde and Emma Sue Cordova of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; one brother, Adalberto Aguilar of Uvalde; 31 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Israel C. Aguilar, Sr.; two grandsons, Israel C. Aguilar Jr. and Joel C. Aguilar, Jr.; one sister, Eliza A. Flores; and one brother, Harvey B. Aguilar.
