Vernon Lee Carnal, 84, of Evansville, IN, passed away Friday, April 1, 2011 at St. Mary's Medical Center.


Vernon was born in Webster County, KY on December 4, 1926 to the late James and Dora Lee Carnal.

Vernon was an MP in the the United States Army serving in Germany from 1945 until 1947.

He attended West Terrace General Baptist Church. Vernon was the owner and operator of Carnal's Top Texaco which was later Carnal's Truck Stop and he worked as a service manager at Lockwoods, Duff Truck Lines and retired from Flexsteel in 1990.

He was a member of United Commercial Travelers, Secretary Treasurer of Council 14, and was a recipient of several awards including the Past Grand Counselor Award, Tony White Award and the O.A. Wilbrenner Award.

Vernon was an avid fisherman and enjoyed gardening and walking at Eastland Mall. He was a family man and loved to work on cars and lawnmowers.

Vernon was a member of the Erie Canal Beagle Club.

Vernon is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ann C. Carnal of Evansville, IN, daughter, Rebekah Settle (Bruce) of Evansville, IN, son, Randy Carnal (Jodi) of Evansville, IN, sisters, Naomi Burklow of KY, Lola Mae Schwerinski of Henderson, KY, brother, Thurman Carnal of Evansville, IN, grandchildren, Karrie Finke (Daniel), Mandi Sartore (Bryan), Courtney Roberts (Steve), Aaron Carnal (Melissa Hasser), great-grandchildren, Hannah, Gracie and Peyton Roberts, Makenzie and Brooklyn Sartore and Eryka Carnal and a beloved sister-in-law, Peggy Sue Collins. Nieces and nephews also survive.
Vernon is preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Mary Lou Burklow and brothers, Everett, Alvis and Arthur Carnal.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Tuesday, April 5, 2011 at Browning Funeral Home 738 Diamond Ave. with Rev. Austin Crow officiating. Burial will be held at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery where the Retired Veterans Memorial Club will conduct military rites.
