British painter. His father was Bartle Grant, a "poverty-stricken" major in the army, and much of his early childhood was spent in India and Burma. He was a grandson of Sir John Peter Grant, 12th Laird of Rothiemurchus.
Studied in Paris and then the Slade School of Art. He was a member of the Bloomsbury group. Although he was gay he was the lover of the painter Vanessa Bell for over fifty years and was the father of Vanessa's daughter Angelica. His lovers included Lytton Strachey, John Maynard Keynes and David Garnett, who his daughter later married.
