Al Brown was born to the late Alfred Brown, Jr., & Velma Lemie-Brown. He grew up in the Trinidad neighborhood on the Buffalo Northside. Al had a boundless vitality. He put that energy to good use at Bennett High School where he was a star athlete & earned All-High honors in football & basketball. He was a starter on the varsity basketball team. He & teammates (including future NBA basketball Hall of Famer Bob Lanier) won two Yale Cup titles in the mid-'60s. Al received a basketball scholarship to the University of Buffalo where he later earned a bachelor's degree. Afterwards, he traveled throughout Europe, South America & Africa. In Freetown (Sierra Leone) Al worked for the international YMCA. He returned to the United States in the late '70s & taught social studies at a high school in Queens, New York. In time, he moved to Sarasota, Florida & continued teaching. He also did community volunteer work, i.e., promoting Project Black Cinema & served as a Boy Scout leader. Al returned to Buffalo a few years ago to care for his ailing parents. Family survivors include his former wife of Orlando, FL., Dr. Hera Nahar; two daughters, Heather (Chijioke) Okoro & Zahra Nahar-Brown both of New York City; a son, Nile Nahar-Brown of New York City; two brothers, Gregory L. (Yvonne)Brown & Calvin W. (Melissa) Brown of Cleveland; and grandfather of Chinedu Isaiah Okoro. Al Brown was a good Trinidad neighbor & friend. He leaves a rich legacy of life achievements. The lives of everyone who knew him are all the better for it...a life well spent.
