Mrs. Bell began her undergraduate studies at Stowe Teachers College, St. Louis, Mo. While pursuing her degree she joined Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority (1st U.S. Greek-letter organization established by African-American college women). She completed her undergraduate work at Lincoln University, Jefferson City, Mo. She then began her life's work as a elementary school teacher in 1937. During this time, she met and married Major Bell, her school pricipal. She briefly retired from teaching to raise a family. Later she accepted a position with the Girl Scout Council of St. Louis. However, she saw the need for professional child care for pre-school age children, and opened a day care center which she directed for 25 years . After raising her children, she returned to full-time teaching and acquired a Masters degree in Mathematics. She retired in 1980 and began enjoying life, sharing with her husband numerous activities they both loved, i.e., square dancing, traveling, and serving others. Her husband of 52 years, Major J. Bell (Pfc, U.S. Army Air Corp, 9 July '43 - 5 Feb. '46) died 5 Oct. 1996 .
