Mr. Belvin experienced a lot of discrimination, but he was never bitter . The World War II veteran ( Tec 4, U.S. Army ) had wanted to become an accountant; but, because he was an African-American, was denied admission to Trinity University after he received an associate's degree from St. Phillip's College . In 1949, he got a job with the U.S. Post Office Department (forerunner of the Postal Service) where he worked until his retirement in 1980. When he began working for the post office, African-American and Anglo employees were segregated, i.e., separate eating and bathrooms. Mr. Belvin recalled a time when African-American postal workers were banned from delivering mail in the downtown San Antonio area because they didn't want a black man to walk in the front door . In the U.S. Army Mr. Belvin served with the 576th Port Company in Washington state, Hawaii and Vancouver, Canada.
