Born in Germany, Gustav (Gus) Wiedenhoft came to the United States as a child. He was in the greenhouse and nursery business in both Illinois and Indiana. In 1902, he married Carrie Hooks. Gus was a florist and nursery owner on the south side of Indianapolis. One summer night during the Second World War, Gus and his wife were savagely beaten by two robbers. Neighbors heard the commotion and called the police, but Gus was dead by the time they arrived. Carrie survived. Though the robbers got the contents of his wallet, they missed over $1,000 squirreled away in tin cans and salt and pepper shakers.
