Born in Milan to a Jewish family, Leonardo Adler received his education in Catholic schools, without having his religious identity revealed to him by his parents. Graduating in engineering in 1905, he was received into the Protestant faith, marrying Viennese born Adelheit Poppy of the latter denomination in 1911. Fathering a daughter in 1917, he served in the Great War and was baptized 'sub conditione' into the Catholic faith in November that year. Remarrying his wife with the Roman ritual, he fathered two sons in 1919 and 1925. Moving to Berlin due to his position, he moved to Libia in 1937 as techinical counselor to the Governor General, Italo Balbo. Becoming a Franciscan Tertiary there, he left his profession for the Franciscan Order, taking his vows in 1956 and being ordained priest on October 4 that year by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Montini, Archbishop of Milan, through a special permission released from Pope Pius XII's end. Passing away in 1965, his remains lie buried at the Merano Cemetery.
