Becoming Bishop of Kraków around the year 1110, it is not known with certainty where he came from. While historians lean towards the idea that he was a Benedictine monk, he was highly active during his episcopate, leaving behind several traces of his activities, including an inventory of the chapter library. Continuing the construction of the Wawel Cathedral, he dedicated the crypt of Saint Leonard in which he was buried upon his death in 1118 beneath its floor, where his remains were practically forgotten for some eight hundred years, until being accidentally discovered on October 14, 1938. Among other things, a bishop's ring, a chalice, a paten, a lead plate engraved with the name MAVRVS EPC, speaking of his death (VIAM UNIVERSE CARNIS INGRESSUS EST) and giving the date, were found amongst his remains. Left in the same space, the latter has been seen marked with the same words.
