The very first burial at the Old Mission of Santa Barbara took place on December 2, 1789, being that of an Indian named Cristobal, a Chumash of the Saspili tribe. Prior to the present mission cemetery, bodies were interred beneath the floor of the church, thus Cristobal was buried there. The church at that time has since been reconstructed to the present one we see standing today.
