The son of Ivan Shishman of Bulgaria, Joseph became a monk on Mount Athos and elected Metropolitan of Ephesus in 1393, went on the elected Patriarch of Constantinople on May 21, 1416. Taking part, along with Byzantine Emperor John VIII Palaiologos, twenty three metropolitan bishops and countless scholars and theologians, in the Council of Florence. While in Florence, being very old and ill, he died in the city within two months of his arrival, as he was a fervent supporter of union between the Churches. Buried at Santa Maria Novella, his tomb survives to this day, with an elaborate fresco portrait in a semi-Byzantine style adorning the site.
