Viola Magdelene Barton passed away peacefully on Saturday morning, January 30, 2010. She was nearing her 108th birthday on March 11 – a time when friends and relatives always gathered to celebrate. She lived at Elms Convalescent Hospital in Glendale since 2001.
Viola was born in Wessington Springs, South Dakota on March 11, 1902 to Peter and Carolina Shultz, immigrants of Germany. She was the youngest member of a family of 12.
She started her life on the family farm in Viola Township, Jerauld County, South Dakota, but often said she did not have to do much work since she was the baby of the family.
When Viola was five, the family moved to the town of Wessington Springs where she attended grade school, high school, and the Wessington Springs Junior College of Music. In 1936, she traveled to California to visit two of her brothers.
There she met Lee Vada Barton at a dance; they married on Valentines Day in 1941 and lived in Glendale and Pasadena. Lee passed away in 1976.
Viola loved music and was an expert piano player She liked to recall playing for the silent movies in Wessington Springs. Her father would not allow her to play for the movies on Sunday, so she had a friend take her to a theater in Lane, about 10 miles away, instead.
Her piano playing continued all her life. She played for the other guests at Elms most every day. She was at her grand niece's home this Christmas, as always, and played many songs by memory.
Viola loved to cook and especially make apple pie, cookies and fried chicken for her friends and family. She also loved crocheting, crossword puzzles, books and her fax machine, and faxed her sister, Grace Way, who was deaf, every day for many years – just like email!
She had always been a member of the Methodist Church and joined the Glendale Methodist Church in 1948.
Viola is survived by three grandchildren, Anita Barton, Paul Barton and Sharon McKinney; three great grandchildren, Joshua Barton, Paul Wood, and Jill Wood; and two great great grandchildren, Kaden Barton and Conlin Barton, and many nieces and nephews, grand and great grand, and wonderful friends, who all gave her a great deal of pleasure, entertaining them and they entertaining her with music, apple pie and card games.
Services were Saturday, February 6, at the Glendale Methodist Church, followed by graveside services at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Glendale Methodist Church, 134 N. Kenwood St., Glendale, CA 91206.
