Illinoisans killed in Vietnam to be remembered
SPRINGFIELD –The 2,998 Illinois troops who died in the Vietnam War will be remembered this weekend with special ceremonies and a 24-hour vigil at the Illinois Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Springfield’s Oak Ridge Cemetery. The ceremony also marks the 26th anniversary of the memorial’s dedication.
The opening ceremony takes place at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 3. Saturday evening at 6, a special ceremony will be held for the 66 men from Illinois still listed as prisoners of war or missing in action.
Veterans from Christian County and the surrounding area who gave their lives in the Vietnam War are remembered today. They are:
PFC William Daniel Ealy and Capt. Joseph Stanley Smith, Assumption; PO1 Gary Le Conaway, Blue Mound; Sgt. Lawrence Allen Shaffer, Edinburg; Sgt. Larry Gene Bandy, Kincaid; 1LT Gal Walter Croon and PFC Aerio Joseph Lucchi, Jr., Nokomis; Sgt. William Richard Maryfield, PFC John Michael McKenna, WO Francis Albert Rochkes, Pana; SP4 Richard Leon Kollmann, Stonington:
