***** Alan there isn't a remembrance of high school without you. Thank you for your bravery and service for our country and freedom.

***** You were one of my few friends during the tough times in High School. You volunteered to go to serve your country in a war that had torn the country apart and did it with pride and dignity. You were a leader, friend and great guy.
I will remember forever the night I found out about your death. I walked the streets all night crying and praying for you. You made the ultimate sacrifice and all should appreciate it.

On September 10, 1972 PFC Alan Paul Ahlfield became a ground casualty.

Private First Class Ahlfield was enlisted as Active Duty Army as Infantry Indirect Fire Crewman Army with the 1st Aviation Brigade.

He became an accidental homicide and/or Casualty circumstances were attributed to "Intentional Homicide Small Arms Fire."

His body was recovered.

Illinoisans killed in Vietnam to be remembered

SPRINGFIELD –The 2,998 Illinois troops who died in the Vietnam War will be remembered this weekend with special ceremonies and a 24-hour vigil at the Illinois Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Springfield’s Oak Ridge Cemetery. The ceremony also marks the 26th anniversary of the memorial’s dedication.

The opening ceremony takes place at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 3. Saturday evening at 6, a special ceremony will be held for the 66 men from Illinois still listed as prisoners of war or missing in action.

Veterans from Christian County and the surrounding area who gave their lives in the Vietnam War are remembered today. They are:

PFC William Daniel Ealy and Capt. Joseph Stanley Smith, Assumption; PO1 Gary Le Conaway, Blue Mound; Sgt. Lawrence Allen Shaffer, Edinburg; Sgt. Larry Gene Bandy, Kincaid; 1LT Gal Walter Croon and PFC Aerio Joseph Lucchi, Jr., Nokomis; Sgt. William Richard Maryfield, PFC John Michael McKenna, WO Francis Albert Rochkes, Pana; SP4 Richard Leon Kollmann, Stonington:

Sgt. Russell Larned Engs III, PFC Robert Eugene Gelonek, Jr., LCPL Joseph Arnold Hill, SP4 Charles Ray Moomey; Cpl. Charles Gregory Ross, SP4 Michael Joseph Sincavage, 1Lt. William Miller Vitale, Taylorville; PFC Emmanuel Lloyd Eaton, Tower Hill; *** PFC Alan Paul Ahlfield, Cpl. John Eugene Martin, and SP4 Theodor William Sandidge, Pawnee.

The closing ceremony begins at 11 a.m. on Sunday, May 4, and will conclude with the retiring of the honor guard from the Illinois Veteran Memorial Vigil Organization.

The vigil and all the ceremonies are free and open to the public.
The Illinois Vietnam Veterans Memorial, is located off Route 29 in Springfield’s Oak Ridge Cemetery.
