Probationary Patrolman Thomas J. Adams, 31, Star #2210, was a 6-month veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the 11th (Fillmore) District.
On August 26, 1973, Officer Adams was shot while off duty and investigating a crime. The officer was found dead on the front porch of a building at 3339 W. Douglas Blvd., in the Marquette District, about six blocks from his home. [Officer Adams was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital at 4:45 a.m. on August 26, 1973.]
Officer Adams was laid to rest in Washington Memorial Cemetery. He was survived by his wife Dorothy; children Mark and Daryl; and parents Thomas and Ophelia.

Officer Adams was apparently about to request a transfer to a different district. He felt threatened and feared for his safety because some citizens in the Fillmore District were trying to compromise his position as a law enforcement officer. He left a higher-paying job at a bank because he wanted to have an effect against street crime.
A young man seen fleeing the area was arrested soon after the murder. The murder weapon, left near the crime scene, was registered to the young man. No additional information was found on resolution of the murder of Officer Adams.
Officer Adams was the fifth Chicago policeman to be murdered in 1973.
