Elke Marie Walton was born at the Charleston Naval Hospital, Charleston, South Carolina on October 9, 1965. The daughter of Ida Marie Yates and Ralph Edward Draper Jr and Michael Ralph Walton. She was raised in the Charleston area, attending North Charleston High School, Hanahan High School and Watterson College where she earned a paralegal degree. She worked as a paralegal and florist in Charleston, SC and Jacksonville Beach, Florida. An artist, Elke loved reading, writing, drawing and painting. She loved the history of Charleston and was the quintessential modern-day Southern Belle. Comfortable by the river, in the woods or on the beach, the Isle of Palms, SC was her favorite place and off its coast is where her earthly remains were laid to rest among the waves. She leaves behind her mother Ida Draper, sisters Tara Walton, Kimberly Draper Samenko (Alan Coker), brother Ralph E. Draper III (Alicia), nieces, Skylar and Jocelyn Samenko and Katelyn Draper, a nephew, Gabriel Draper, her partner Timothy Anderson and countless aunts, uncles and cousins. A mother and grandmother, she leaves behind her beloved son, Charles Edward McGowan and beautiful granddaughter, Carmen Jade McGowan (Melissa Cook).
