Mr. Wingate was born on January 15, 1935 in Charleston, SC, the son of Harry Lee Wingate and Jessie Jewell Brewer. A veteran of the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Army he served in the Korean War and Vietnam War where he received the Purple Heart. He retired from the Army as a Sergeant First Class and entered civilian law enforcement. During his law enforcement career he served with the Charleston County Police, North Charleston Police as the first Chief of Police for the Charleston County Aviation Authority (Airport) Police and as a Chief in North Carolina. He was a member of the American Legion Post 166, Shriner with York Rite Omar Temple; 32nd Degree Pythagorean Masonic Lodge #21, lifetime AUSA, International Association Chief of Police lifetime member and a member of the Highland Park Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Ida Marie Wingate of Hanahan, SC; son, Robert Leslie Wingate, Jr. of Myrtle Beach, SC; daughter, Theresa Wingate of Hanahan, SC; and four grandchildren. He was buried with full military honors at Beaufort National Cemetery.
