Ervin Elrade Addy was the son of Jacob Addy and Mary Rawl Addy, born in South Carolina and raised in near Haralson, Coweta, Georgia. He married Amanda Dyson (#53743257), daughter of James and Eliza Dyson, and fathered three sons, Alva (#18033340), Edgar Samuel (#14361675) and Emmette (#50279016). He enlisted March 4, 1862, as a private in Company 'A' of the 41st Georgia Volunteer Infantry Army of Tennessee, CSA, Coweta, Georgia in the Civil War under Capt. Stallings and Col. McDaniel. He died 2 months and 1 day later of complications after the measles. After being informed of his death, his wife wrote this wonderful poem:
Farewell, dear husband, alas,
We part to meet on earth no more;
Thy spirit to a brighter spot has passed,
Where earthly troubles will ne'er reach thee more.
Farewell, my dearest, while I mourn thy loss,
Heavenly stars bright o'er thee shine;
The moon's bright rays, now gentle and soft,
O'er thy silent grave decline.
Oh, God, I know that 'tis thy will,
My loss on earth should be his gain;
I feel that he is with thee still,
And with thee he will e'er remain.
My deepest thoughts now linger round
That heap of lifeless clay;
I think of thee - my heart bows sadly down,
While I know thou art not, today.
Oh, God, I ask thy help today,
This broken heart to cheer;
From one thou hast taken away,
One I loved and held most dear.
Farewell, loved one, alas, adieu!
