Italian statesman, born at Ribera, Sicily. Active in the resorgimento and since 1860 a leading figure, alongside Garibaldi. After 1870, President of the Chamber, later minister of the interior. Prime minister 1887-1891 and 1893-1896. Representative of an expansionist colonial policy (Abyssinia) and of repression on the internal front, especially with respect to social movements in Sicily.

During the last years, the degradation of the monument lead to demands, especially of Ribera authorities, to transfer the remains to Crispi's birthplace, cf.
