Emil Paul Wend was a free-spirit who loved to travel and have adventures. He joined the United States Navy during the Second World War, serving as a petty officer. He spent much of his life traveling around the United States and Mexico working many different jobs. In Mexico, he once attended a dance on the second floor of a building when a fire broke out and Emil had to exit the building sliding down some wires to the ground. He also lived in Alaska prior to its becoming a state in 1959.

Emil enjoyed writing poetry and received some encouragement from Robert Frost. He eventually returned to Lemont, Illinois in the early 1950s and joined the family business until he retired.
