Irene M. (Maderia) Andre, 89, lifelong resident of Stonington, died Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at Apple Rehabilitation Center in Mystic where she had been a resident for some time. She was born in Stonington, on July 2, 1920, the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Costa) Maderia. She attended local schools.
She worked for many years for American Velvet Company in Stonington, as a Reeler. She married William Andre at Saint Mary Church, Stonington, in 1942. They too settled in Stonington, raising their two children here. Sadly, he predeceased her in 1974. Devoted wife and mother, her greatest joy was in caring for her home, family and extended family as Aunt and Godmother. A member of St. Mary Church, she was also a member of the Nina Circle, Daughters of Isabella, and Our Lady of Fatima Society.
She is survived by her two daughters and their husbands; Patricia and Richard Ralston of Northford, CT, and Kathleen and Joseph St. Rock of Stonington, six grandchildren; Kimberly, Richard and William, Joseph, Allison and Thomas and also four great grandchildren. She is also survived by one sister; Betty Goodman of Arizona, and her lifelong, dearest friend, Bea Allen. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by four siblings; Dorothy Faillace, Joseph Maderia, Manuel Maderia and Frances Medeiros.
Calling hours will be held at Mystic Funeral Home, 51 Williams Ave., Route 1, Mystic, CT, on Saturday, January 2, 2010 from 9 to 11:00 AM, proceeding to a Funeral Mass at Saint Mary Church, Stonington, beginning at 11:30 AM. Burial will follow in Stonington Cemetery, Stonington, CT. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Apple Rehabilitation Center, 28 Broadway, Mystic, CT 06355.
